The Roman legionary museum and the Roman baths are well worth a visit if you ever get the chance - everything you ever wanted to know about the Romans in Britannia. A lot of the original Roman site is under the present town - but then there is the Amphitheatere.
Site plan of how it looked originally.
It is hard to photograph the whole place – it is so large. I remember sitting on one of those banks as a small child and being told stories about the gladiators fighting in the centre of the arena.
Walking up those steps and into that arena I was gripped by the most awful feeling of terror, and – just for a second – I thought I could hear the roar of the crowds. I spent the rest of my visit trying to convince myself it was my imagination. Sometimes it’s better that way.
Jon lost in contemplation.
This gives some idea of the huge scale of the place.
